Mascot Mine, Hedley © 1993 Hugo Redivo

“Mascot Mine, Hedley”

The historic Mascot Mine is located in Hedley, British Columbia. This underground Gold Mine was started at the turn of the century and ceased operating in the early fifties, when the mining methods of those days no longer yielded adequate returns. About forty years later production started up again with open pit mining and it finally stopped operating in 1996. During two decades of operation, ten tons of Gold has been taken out of this mine.

These buildings were in full use during the first period of operation. Over time, they have deteriorated but are now being restored to preserve the heritage of the unique location and the manner they are attached to the steep mountainside. The photograph is unusual because of the selective lighting provided by the morning sun and the unique angle afforded by the aerial view.

This image was purchased by the B.C. Ministry of Tourism and published in the popular book of aerial photographs: "Over Beautiful British Columbia".
